"Mom, my mind is talking to me all the time! I can hear it talking. It won't be quiet!" This is from my 5 year old son. Wow, I think...how early it starts. Mind chatter.
It has taken me to 40+ to start deprogramming that mind chatter. To realize that I don't have to listen to all that my mind tells me. Don't get me wrong, my mind has a very valuable job. And I love to feed my mind all sorts of things to churn - books, magazines, interesting conversations, etc...
And, then there are times when you just want to shut it off! The chatter. The incessant discussion
about what is wrong, what isn't happening, what I could do better, how I could look better, I could be making more money, cooking more healthy - heck, cooking period, etc...the chatter rarely stops.
I've talked about the power of silence before. I have often found it difficult to just sit and quiet my mind...meditate if you will. Actually that's not totally true. There are times when I love to sit and relax and find my mind relaxing with me. It's the other times when I am struggling to turn it off. When I sit in mediatation with such purpose that I MUST be quiet - surprise, surprise, it doesn't work too well. I find myself getting antsy about the next blog entry to write, or an errand to add to the list, making a mental note to organize my books, my desk...anything but to sit and be.
Why the big fuss about mediation? I know that it truly promotes better health, more creativity in the long run, a greater connection to myself and the universe. I think my biggest reason is for patience. As an entrepreneur, mother and creative type I just have tons of ideas and possibilities. Learning patience with myself, the process and with others is invaluable to the way I want to live my life.
I have found a wonderful tool to help quiet my mind and increase my relaxation. It's a CD series through Holosync . They are powerful, not cheap, and worth it. I know many coaches who swear by these CD's. Using inaudible tones underneath rain and singing bowls they stimulate your brain waves so that you experience deeper levels of relaxation. I have found that when I'm listening to the CD's each night that I am more patient and compassionate the next day.
I will warn you that they send lots of literature and tons (yes, tons) of testimonials. Much of it is helpful and much of it is, well, just too much. If you can wade through it, you'll see that there is a lot of valuable information and that underneath the sales material they just want to make sure you are having a good experience and that it's valuable for you. And, with all that, I highly recommend it. It's worth the investment.
I'm on my second level now and I'm still impressed. And, by the way, they have a great ezine called appropriately enough, Mind Chatter. Make sure you sign up!
May you enjoy greater relaxation this summer~
