Joy & Business…Which Job Tops the List?

Harvard Business Review article reveals #1:  Entrepreneurs!  Freedom and flexibility are at the top of the list for what makes people happy.

Read more from RosaBeth Moss Kantor...

“Here are some clues about joy. On a recent Gallup Healthways survey of 100,000 Americans, business owners outrank 10 other occupations in overall well-being, despite working longer hours and earning slightly less, on average, than professionals and managers/executives, who rank second and third. The surprising fourth is farming, fishing, and forestry, despite the lowest income of any group. (Maybe not surprising, given how many leaders unwind by fishing or brush-cutting.) More confined service, clerical, transportation, and manufacturing workers are at the bottom, in the low 40s on Gallup's 100-point well-being index compared to over 70 for business owners. “

Are you an Intelligent Optimist?

I love this month's cover story in Ode magazine, "In Praise of Intelligent Optimists".  So much better of Hope_tree_light a name than being called "pollyanna", don't you think! This article really speaks to us as small business owners and in particular our entrepreneurial energy and skills.

The feature article talks about how the world has fallen into a dark state...as well all hear constantly and see results daily...and yet it's times like this when we need optimism.  It's easy to be an optimist when things are going fine but it's a real mark of character when you can be optimistic during tough times.

More from the article: "Optimism isn't about denying reality; it's about creating a better reality than you're facing...The Intelligent Optimist knows a half-empty glass is also half full. And she knows more can be gained by focusing on what she has than by focusing on what she's missing. You learn to become optimistic by concentrating on things that give you a sense of satisfaction and you remain an optimist by feeding those things to make them grow.   Intelligent Optimists know that for every problem there is (at least the beginning of) a solution andd that the search for that solution can be inspirational in itself."

Ode goes on highlight their first ever list of 25 Intelligent Optimists featuring individuals around the world who are doing their best to bring positive change to their communities, their countries and the world.

What I get about this view is that optimism is a choice.  It's not about denying reality - in fact, there is power in being able to confront the real issues of what's going on around the world or even in your own bank account.  What I see is that my clients are paying even more attention to their business.  This is when your entrepreneurial creativity really gets fired up.  You look for ways to create solutions - you hae to be more ingenius when the flow of abundance shifts. (notice I didn't say dried up...it hasn't dried up...just shifted)

This is a time to listen to your business - what is it telling you? It will point to places that are broken and need your attention. It will whisper areas of abundance just waiting to be picked.  Really hear your clients and customers - they will tell you what they want now in their circumstances...sometimes they want more access to you, sometimes they want it packaged differently...listen.....you will see it, hear it, feel it...the solutions are right in front of you.

You do have to slow down to hear the whispers.....

In my Joyful Business Guide system we get you to focus on JoyFlow Sightings.  This seems like a perculiar activity for marketing system but let me tell you...looking for the joy that is flowing in your business at this very moment will do more to shift your energy, help you tap into your creativity and get you into inspired action than anything else!  Check it out at Joyful Business Guide...

Hot Women, Cool Planet

I love this idea...women gathering together to support change...to be the change we want to see.  I had the priviledge of seeing Margaret Wheatley speak last year and she said that the biggest potential for change is with women in leadership.

We have the potential to stand up and own our leadership and explemplify embracing the masculine and feminine energies....and give this world what it is so desperately crying for!  (I'm not making a political endorsement here, by any means.  That's a conversation for a different blog!)

What I do know is that it all starts in your own backyard! Right where you are...

Visit this website Hot Women for a Cool Planet and take the pledge below...  empower yourself...

HotwomencoolplanetTo leverage the power of uniting our voices and actions, I join women around the world as I commit to:

  • Find every opportunity to connect with others and initiate conversations about our shared future and what we can do together in our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, etc. I learn from others and share what I know.
  • Begin each day by using my power of creativity to visualize a healthy world at peace and send love to all beings, knowing that this "invisible" act changes the world.
  • Find a way to support at least one woman less fortunate than myself and to practice gratitude for the life I have.
  • Take accountability for my own well-being: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so that I am a resilient renewable resource. I keep a light heart, an open mind, and a generous spirit.
Act as if we are one and never fall prey to the delusion of separateness. I understand that none of us can do it alone but we can definitely do it together.

The Art of Joyful Business - on internet tv!

I can tell you that Law of Attraction is a hot, hot topic!  And how to really use in your life and businessHay_heal_your_life for what you most desire is what people want to hear about.

Oprah just devoted a whole program to Attraction today on her show -  guests included Louise Hay, founder of Hay House Publishing (they publish all the personal growth guru's books and programs - Wayne Dyer, Sonia Choquette, Greg Bradden, Dr. Christiane Northrup to name a few), and coaches - Martha Beck and Cheryl Richardson were guests.  Louise Hay is really the one who made the power of affirmations widely known.  I hope you TIVO'd - I'm going to order the DVD as it was that good!  Full of real life stories of how people have successfully used attraction tools and principles to change their life!

On the same theme...I'm going to be the guest on the Premiere edition of "Tap Your Potential", a brand new internet tv program on the Profitability Channel hosted by Barbara Giamanco of Women's Mentor Network.  I love the title of my program..."The Art of Joyful Business"....and that it is...an art. It's a practice, a creative endeavor, something to be loved and nurtured and to not hold on too tightly as to sQeEzE the life out of it!

I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

Spirit at Work Conference

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Spirit at Work Conference. They held their annual Isaw_conference_banner_10_10_07_sma awards and conference here in Atlanta. The conference, entitled Beyond Wealth: Creating and Measuring Authentic Success, honored companies and individuals who have demonstrated certain criteria that fosters human values like courage, compassion, faith, and hope. It was inspiring to be in the company of such purposeful, professional and committed people. There were people from all around the world who came to this intimate conference to celebrate and discuss how business can be different.

I was excited to hear Patricia Aburdeen's keynote program. She is the author of MegaTrends 2010.  She blends the practical business goals with demonstrating how companies who have followed a holistic mission of impacting "stakeholders" vs. just "stockholders" when growing a company.  She also cited Stephen M.R. Covey's (Big daddy's son) book, about trust. When trust -in an organization/team/within oneself - when trust goes up then speed goes up and costs come down.  Isn't that amazing to hear?  When we trust each other things happen at a quicker pace and it's cheaper because we're all in sync.  (isn't that beautiful to envision?) We intuitively know this to be true and yet we often  still feel pressured that the way to quick revenue to move quick regardless of the trust of the environment/circumstances/people/intuition.

Img_0145 I also volunteered to support a few of the conference speakers as room monitor, as well as, display the Joyful Business products in the bookstore. It was very fun to be at the author signing party sharing the Joyful Business products with spiritual minded, gratitude-loving, business people!

I have also really enjoyed getting to know Tricia Molloy, author of Divine Wisdom at Work.  I first heardImg_0149  her speak a few weeks ago at the Enlightened Entrepreneurs Network.  Next thing I know I'm being the room monitor for her program at Spirit at Work. Don't you love how the universe works in synchronicities?  Or, as Tricia refers to them as "godwinks"!  She shares her 10 Universal Principles for working with Wisdom.  We're like two spirit sisters!  Be sure to check out her book on her website at Divine Wisdom at Work!

Maybe Miss America was right all along!

You have often heard me say "Our thoughts create our reality" or "You get what you focus on."

You've seen it play out in your life...  You are playing tennis and a woman on the other team has an amazingly hard serve. You start thinking to yourself, "oh no, I can't hit this!" and sure enough you miss. And the more you think "I can't return her serve, it's too hard" .... the more you miss and the more nervous you get and - well, your game really starts to fall apart.

We often see this with our sons and daughters.  Have you had the experience of helping them study for a class and they say, "This is too hard"?  They get frustrated (and you probably do too) and they actually create the circumstances where it really is too hard for them to absorb right now.

Notice the places in your life where you are telling yourself that "This is too hard.  It will never happen".

Recently I thought about this as I spent a weekend at the Southeast Peace Conference here in Atlanta. The focus of the conference was connecting us with what peace means to us (peace in the world, in our schools, our neighborhoods, our homes, and in our own minds) and generating ideas for how we can support an idea that is starting to flourish on Capitol Hill here in the states.

The idea is for a program to support starting a Department of Peace.  The goals are to provide research, studies, and peace alternatives to the President, and to provide funding for conflict resolution in areas of domestic violence, gang activity and bullying in schools, as well as alternatives in international conflicts.

As I came back to the 'real world" (so to speak) and started talking to people around me about this conference, I noticed their eyes glazed over and they gave me excuses why this won't work.  What I realized is that most of us don't have a vision for what peace really would be like.

Which brings me back to Miss America. We have a culturally accepted sterotype of Miss America.  We often jokingly say ...."She is beautiful for sure, but she isn't too bright."  She will say her greatest dream is world peace. (Now pay attention here...) When we hear "world peace", we all laugh!  And say, "See, I told you she wasn't very intelligent, what a silly dream. How naive!"

Well, No wonder we don't have world peace. We don't believe it can actually happen.

I felt frustrated at first.  And, then I realized the cool part.  These new visions for what is possible in our businesses, our lives and even in the world, start with a seed.

SeedSo, I think of it as planting a little seed of a new way of being.  A seed was planted at this conference, I planted seeds in my recent conversations, and I'm planting a seed now.  Sometimes we can get frustrated when someone else doesn't see the whole vision right away.  Know that you are creating change by planting the seed of possibility.

Notice your thoughts about what YOU believe is impossible. Maybe it's a dream you have for yourself, for others or for a change in the world.

Start giving attention to what IS possible.

Just start conversations and plant a seed.

Start a conversation with yourself. Some questions to contemplate or journal with:

"What if......?"

"What would be different if I.....?"

"Here's some evidence that the change is wanting to happen...."

Start today by planting a seed and creating a shift.

As in the story in the book, Synchronicity, The Inner Path of Leadership, you never know when the 3,741,953rd snowflake will drop...and break the branch.

Power for Good

"Power is the ability to achieve purpose, Power is the ability to effect change .."

~Martin Luther King

This quote stood out for me as I read TIME magazine's cover article on Martin Luther King. This week in the U.S. we honor King's birthday. I took some time on his celebrated birthday to reflect on this powerful man and others who are creating change and who are so full of purpose and power.

In a previous edition of TIME, the covered featured some other powerful people - the "TIME People of the Year - Bono, and Melinda and Bill Gates. I was especially interested in the article about Bono (aren't we all?). It was fascinating to read about this hugely successful, hip, cultural icon and how he uses his fianancial, social, and "hipness" power for good. That was what was striking me the most - he was using his "power for good" - creating awarenss and real action for conquering world poverty, debt and aids.

He knows how "cool" it is to be around him and his well known friends. To picture him walking in the halls of the White House in his trademark glasses and clothing makes me laugh. I am impressed at how much studying he has done to educate himself on global issues so that he can also be seen as someone understands the systems, the global issues and the governmental issues (however self made all those are!). What really is fascinating is to hear how he "uses" his power for good to get together unlikely people to have "conversations that matter".

It makes me wonder....how do we use our "power" in our everyday lives? We may not all be rock superstars but we all have positions that come with power...parents, teachers, employers, business owners, a volunteer, little league coaches & business coaches.  How about as a spouse, a child, how about a waiter - talk about power! A waiter has the power to make your dinner a disaster or a wonderfully delightful experience.

All of these roles in our life come with power - spoken or unspoken - whether you are being a victim or a leader - there's power.

How are you weilding your power?

Where can you use your "power for good"?

Joyfully stepping into owner my "power for good",

Laura

Would you see "the movie of YOUR life?"

What if you went to the movie theatre and realized they were playing the movie of YOUR life?  Would you go see it? Would you give it a high rating? Would you want your money back? Which Hollywood star would be playing you?  Would it be a drama, romance or action thriller? Would you invite your friends to join you at the premiere?
There's no time like the present to create the movie you'd like to see! What would you like to change in your life? You are creating your movie right here, right now, each and every day....
Check out the song "Movie of Your Life" by Spencer Day. A fabulously rich, playful jazz song which asks these very questions.  I'm loving playing this while I work...it makes me think about the legacy of my actions of what I'm doing right now, today.
Thanks to Antonia Russo, a wonderfully creative Image Consultant in our Entrepreneur Succcess Program for Image Consultants. She raved about Spencer and music!
Enjoy!

Passionate User

This is the blog of a Passionate User. I am a Passionate User of anything related to being a Joyful Entrepreneur - spirituality, business, marketing, branding, business ownership, leadership, consciousnesses, mindfulness, media, music, books, travel, women, men, couples, boys, life, mid-life, loving life, making enough money by helping people to love their business and enjoy their life!

Having a mindset of a Passionate User, a termed coined in the computer gaming industry, is so freeing. Much more freeing than feeling like I have to an expert!  Expert thoughts, expert expectations (real or imagined) - stop me in my tracks!  Being a Passionate User - I get to share, I get to discuss, I get to be passionate while on the trail learning with you.

As Joyful Entrepreneurs, we are on a new trail - unblazed, wild, adventureous, scary and exciting. (Reminds me of the movie - Last of the Mohicans!)

Ok, so my "expert gremlin" (probably funded and heavily supported by "authority gremlin")* is jumping up and down saying "Nooooooo!  Don't let them think you don't know everything!"  C'mon, we know it just isn't possible to know everything.  Especially in this new day, there's just so much to know and it changes by the nanosecond!  What's more helpful is to be curious, to be aware, and be willing to apply.

Some questions to get you started:  What's really valuable is being able to see what is working, What about it works, what doesn't work, what your vision is and what do you need to get there?

Did you get those questions?  They really work....(gratefully borrowed and lovingly used often from a book called "First Break All The Rules")

What is working?

What about it works?

What doesn't work?

What would you like it to be like? (What's your vision?)

What do you need to get it there?

And how would a Passionate User answer those questions?

Curiously,

Laura
